Two Ole Miss students found dead near kratom packages in separate incidents

Description: The University of Mississippi has confirmed the deaths of two Ole Miss students as local law enforcement offers an update on its investigation into how two college-aged students who were found near packaged kratom died.

In its statement, Lafayette County Metro Narcotics explained that it was investigating the deaths of two college-aged individuals who were found Monday near kratom that had been purchased from a retail store.

Law enforcement have not determined, though, if their deaths are related and are currently investigating the deaths separately. Ole Miss stated that campus police are currently not aware of any other student deaths.

Investigators also have not confirmed if kratom had been a factor in how they died. However, they went on to advise people to avoid kratom as well as other substances or medication that were not prescribed to them by a trusted source.

Both the university and law enforcement indicated that misinformation and rumors about the students’ deaths are spreading through the Oxford community and urged people not to engage in speculation or spread information that has not come from official sources.

"We understand that uncertainty can create fear and rumors," Metro Narcotics wrote. "We ask our community to rely on information released through official sources as these investigations continue."

The agency added that it will quickly issue an alert if any threat to public safety is identified.

"The University is heartbroken by the recent loss of two students and extends our condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time," Ole Miss said.

Metro Narcotics echoed the university in its statement, writing, "First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends, classmates, and loved ones affected by these tragic losses."
